2023 WAMBA Impact Report
“In a year when weather dominated the headlines, the WAMBA MTB Community stood strong, demonstrating resilience and commitment to our trails and this incredible sport. The 2023 season has been our most impactful yet. Thank you.”
-Matt Stout, WAMBA President
Trails. Teamwork. Community. That’s how WAMBA Rolls.

Trails
• Significant time was spent by our Trail Crew and our volunteers in bringing our trails back from July’s flooding events. Our newest construction trails performed well, while our legacy trails saw damage to drainage channels and general erosion. All things considered, Woodstock fared well thanks to the quality of our trail construction, but replacing drainage and erosion control was our top focus and this work will continue into 2024.
• Introduced our first two Adaptive-Friendly trails, First Drop and Avery’s Interstate on the Saskadena Six Trails network. Our work was funded through a generous grant from Vermont Adaptive’s Community Builder fund.
• Widened and regraded Red Line for easier climbing, and safer/more fun descent.
• Completed the refresh of Cloud Drop - using handwork on the top and hydraulic assistance at the bottom.
• Thanks to a VMBA Trails Grant, we completely re-built Sir Bermsalot, making one of the best top-to-bottom flow trails in Vermont (when combined with Cloud Drop)
• The compilation of this work has created a Red Line – Cross Town – Bermsalot loop for younger riders. This moderate climb rewards riders with the fun flow of Bermsalot.
• Opened Giddy Up, a restored legacy trail on Mt. Peg, that makes the ascent from North to South more manageable (eliminating the need to climb Rolling Rock).
• At Saskadena Six, the bottom of Avery’s was re-built with fun, flowy berms, making S6’s blue trail a roller coaster-like ride from top to bottom.
• Installed Chalkboard Kiosks at all primary trailheads for important updates on trail closures and dirt conditions.• Revitalized the Aqueduct’s Pump Track and enhanced drainage.

Teamwork
• We welcomed a RECORD MEMBERSHIP this year, surpassing 400 paid WAMBA members!
• Hosted multiple volunteer trail days for spring cleanup, completion of Giddy Up, Adaptive Trail preparations at S6, and fall leaf blowing and weed whacking.
• Ran Tuesday night gravel rides from April through October exploring the roads and trails of our region.
• Another successful year of Thursday night mountain bike group rides, alternating between the Mt. Peg Trails and the Aqueduct Trails.
• This summer featured the return of our Monday Night Youth Rides and Girls Rides. Let by MS/HS Coach Todd Uva, our young riders explored the various networks surrounding our community.
• The Woodstock Triple Crown Challenge welcomed more than 80 entrants this year, in an effort to win prize packs from our Local Partners. The flooding of July extended the Challenge from a 1-month effort to a 2-month window, giving everyone an opportunity to conquer the WAMBA Networks. Riders came to Woodstock from all over New England to enter.• We partnered with our friends at Vermont Eclectic to design a new limited edition Woodstock VT cycling t-shirt.
• The Vermont Overland named WAMBA a charity partner of the race. In exchange, we delivered the best, most spirited SAG stop this side of the Connecticut River!
• A summer of wood-working by WAMBA volunteers has created enhanced signage across the Mt. Peg Trails. Clear, visible signs with color coding now guide our riders throughout the network.
• WAMBA has enjoyed a record year in our Local Partners program, with more than 20 area businesses aligning their support for Woodstock’s area trails.
• Our commitment to year-round riding continued in 2023 with winter grooming at both the Aqueduct and Mt. Peg Trails. We are especially grateful to Local Partner Matt Gray for his work at the Aqueduct with his SnowDog.
• Partnered with the Kelly Brush Foundation and Vermont Adaptive to do an adaptive-assessment of S6 and the Mt. Peg Trails. We look forward to making more trails accessible to all! -
Community
• Prepared Mt Peg for the Vermont Youth Cycling Fall Enduro, a race which featured more than 200 youth riders.
• Hosted the Maxxis Eastern States Cup, welcoming more than 300 of New England’s best enduro riders for a weekend festival of riding at Saskadena Six and Mt. Peg. Our hosted rest stop was once again a favorite among ESC riders. No one hosts a SAG stop like WAMBA!
Our hosting was made possible by a generous grant from the Woodstock Woodstock Economic Development Commission.
• Celebrated the kickoff of riding season with a community tailgate in Know Meadow.
• Hosted a group from Soldiers of Singletrack, a veteran-run organization helping soldiers deal with service-related stress by connecting with each other and with the sport of mountain biking.
